Cold Moon Written Review – New Release

Title Cold Moon
Year 2016
Distributor Curmudgeon Films
Availability VOD Everywhere
Director Griff Furst
Actors Josh Stewart, Frank Whaley, Christopher Lloyd
Review Crime, check. Revenge, check. Ghosts that may or may not look like Beetlejuice, check. If you like all of these things, this may just be the movie for you.

Cold moon is a movie adapted from the book Cold Moon over Babylon, written by Michael McDowell, who also wrote Beetlejuice, The Nightmare before Christmas, and other movies. It’s a story that begins with the murder of a 16-year-old girl and unfolds in unexpected ways. It starts in the Larkin’s blueberry farm, from where Margaret (Sarah Catherine Bellamy) leaves one afternoon, never to return. We see her murdered by a masked murderer with a luxury of violence. Her family is worried when she doesn’t return that same afternoon. But when her body is discovered, tied to her bicycle in the bottom of the river, is when the story really starts.

At first it seems like the film may be a slasher, but that quickly changes. It’s an interesting mixture of crime, thriller, drama and supernatural phenomena. It’s not perfect, but it’s interesting enough to keep you engaged. The acting is, for the most part, excellent. We found ourselves wishing the role of Evelyn Larkin had been played by Marlyn Mason (Besetment), because she would have been a much better choice than Candy Clark. Other than that, the cast is solid. There are some familiar faces, like Josh Stewart (The Collector), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Frank Whaley (Vacancy), and Robbie Kay (Once upon a Time). Their performances, as well as those by the less known people, are solid. The only gripe is the struggle the actors had at pulling off a Southern accent, it felt forced by most.

There are also many special effects, many of which were credible. There is also some CGI that is less than perfect, but it doesn’t take you away from the experience. The sound is a shining point, bold and enticing. There’s a decent amount of jump scares and there were good kills, but a few of them were marred by the use of CGI. If there had been more practical effects and make up, it would have been a much better movie.

All in all, we recommend you give Cold Moon a watch. It’s interesting and fun, if not too scary. If snakes scare you, though, you will find it scarier.
